WhatsApp Deletes 2 Million Accounts Every Month to Tackle Fake News

WhatsApp says it’s deleting over 2 million accounts per month, with many of these ejections the result of its systems spotting abnormal activity related to fake news and misinformation, according to a report in The Guardian.

The company said about 95 percent of the deleted accounts have suspicious activity such as immediately sending out messages without a “Typing” dialog, or spamming contacts with messages soon after signing up. The AI-based systems clean out such accounts immediately, or at the very least flag them.
